War of 1812 Conventions in Painesville, Ohio

In 1858 and 1859, and probably other years, there was a Convention of veterans of the War of 1812 in Painesville. The 1858 parade and speeches in the park were attended by Lake County vets. The 1859 gathering was much larger. including Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, and other Counties, meeting in Painesville. This latter Convention was more political, suggesting voting for representatives who would pass a pension act similar to that for Revolutionary War veterans. The listing below shows who was listed in the paper as vets. The 1858 people were attendees; the 1859 group may not have been there. Some names may be duplicates.

Notice to Old Soldiers!
Those for whom I have been employed to obtain the ben-
efit of the laws of the State of New York, for clothing,
equipments, &c., while in the service in that State, in the
War of 1812, are hereby informed that I have obtained Certifi-
cates for the following persons, which will be sent to each of
them on payment of the stipulated fees for my services, to
wit--Anson Valentine, Lyman B. Rose, Solomon Woodard,
Samuel Phelps, Ormi Hildreth, Henry Johnson, Parley
Green, Andrew Cole, Hezekiah S. Cole, Henry Brakeman,
Moses Gage, Edward Griffin, Silas W. Ferry, Samuel T. Booth,
Nathaniel Curtis, John Valentine, Wm. S. Stewart, Eliza
Spencer, Abel Ray, Ezekiel Livingstone, and Nathaniel J.
Hill. As I have expended considerable money in the prosecu-
tion of these claims, I hope each one will be prompt in the
discharge of their obligations to me. My fees are stipulated
at 20 per cent. of the amount to which the applicant is enti-
tled at the time the fees are paid, which will increase in
amount as the interest increases, till the fees are paid. It
will therefore be for the interest of all to pay the fees imme-
diately, and thereby save the accumulation of fees by delay
of payment. I have a copy of a Blank Certificate, by which
all can see the form.       HORACE STEELE.
